Does Soapstone contain Asbestos?
    | The debate on whether or not and to what extent there is asbestos in soapstone looms regularly. Is Soapstone from ArtistiX safe Yes! Our stones are tested for unsafe substances and also on asbestos. Our tests during the last 10 years have never found a measurable amount of more than 0.1 mass%. There is no risk for asbestos when working with soapstone from ArtistiX. Our testresults can be downloaded from our website, or we will send them to you upon request. Nevertheless: please always consider your health when working in stone: protect your lungs from dust, your eyes from splinters and your hearing from noise! Can soapstone contain Asbestos Talc and soapstone may contain asbestos. In a longitudinal study in Germany samples of materials used have been taken over a periode of 10 years. Only very small quantities of asbestos have been detected. The study was conducted by the BGIA (Berufsgenossenschaftlichen Instituts für Arbeitsschutz) an organization that looks after safety and health of working environments. The investigation revealed that in a quarter of the investigated talc samples traces of asbestos where found. In only 2 of the samples, a measurable amount was found (> 0.1 mass%). Air measurements at workplaces showed that even when working with talcum powder with more than 0.1% asbestos this leads to a negligible number of particles per cubic meter (10000 F/m3). Asbestos fibers were identified in only 5 of the 68 air samples. It cannot be determined whether soapstone is the source of the fibers. |
